We judge books by the cover, movies by the trailer, and people by their posts. While we are quick to pass judgement on others, the Word of God gives us some guiding prinicples and warnings. Here are a few observations from Matthew 7:1-5, 12, and a few other guiding passages.
I. God is Judge. We are not.
Isaiah 33:22 “For the LORD is our judge; the LORD is our lawgiver; the LORD is our king; he will save us.
God is the rule giver, the perfect judge, and the Sovereign One ruling over all. We need Him to reveal to us how to live and how to be saved from this broken world.
II. If you are the judge, others can be judge, too. Matthew 7:1-2
One time my wife got a speeding ticket. I let her have it, showing my frustration and talking down to her. I insisted on driving the next day. Guess what? I got pulled over by the SAME policeman in the SAME exact location. Cara was more gracious to me than I was to her. If you are going to judge others, expect that same judgement for yourself.
III. Check yourself before checking others. Matthew 7:3-5
I get mad at my children for not listening, being stubborn, disobedience … and then God reminds me that I am that way with Him on a daily basis.
Psalm 139:23-24, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!”
IV. The Word of God is the measure/rule
2 Timothy 3:16-18
The Holy Spirit, through the Word of God, will guide you in truth as you seek God on how to live.
V. We can’t judge those who are not in the family
1 Corinthians 5:12-13 “For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside…”
Would you expect someone who has never played football to know all of the rules? Why do we expect those walking in darkness, deceived by the Enemy, to act and behave like followers of Jesus? People need Jesus first, and then Jesus will change them and show them how to live.
We do judge those inside the church, however, because we are in a family where God is our Father and He has given us His rules for life.
VI. Restore with love and gentleness
Galatians 6:1 If anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.
There is a lot more… but these verses are guiding principles/beginning points as we go to the Word of God for guidance.
