Three words to help correct and refine your focus: Love, Authority, and Hope. Only Jesus Christ can be the object of each of these and never let you down.
Think of the greatest love story you have seen or heard. What is the greatest act of love on display in the history of humanity? The Hanging Gardens, the Taj Mahal, the creation of the garbage disposal (this one will bring you to tears), and thousands of movies and songs will try and capture or express love, but there is only one true display:
John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
Romans 5:6-8 “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
God is love, and has displayed love ultimately in the giving on His Son, Jesus Christ.
What has ultimate authority over you? Whoever/whatever you give ultimate authority over you is your god. Consider this:
If pleasure is your authority (controlling force), you will sacrifice people, possessions, and time to achieve it.
If people is your authority, you will sacrifice possessions, time, and pleasure to achieve their approval.
If possessions are your authority, you will sacrifice time, pleasure, and people to achieve them.
Jesus said, “All authority has been given to me.” (Matthew 28:18)
Colossians 1 declares, “all things were created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
If Jesus has all authority, He is LORD. And if He is your ultimate authority, you will (and with joy) sacrifice possessions, pleasure, and man’s approval to purse Jesus.
Ask yourself: “Who is controlling my life, and how is that working out for me?”
Lastly, think about hope. We live in a very dark, broken, and confused world. Moral relativism and tolerance rule the day, and the blind are leading the blind (Luke 6). What is the solution? Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).
John 16:33 “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Romans 8:31 “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be[i] against us?”
Romans 8:37 “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”
Jesus is Love, Lord, and our Hope. Choose today to trust and follow Him. For believers in Christ, choose to respond in worship, love, honor, and obedience to Jesus as He leads you in this new year.
